Some books are life-changing. For many students of theology Jürgen Moltmann’s The Crucified God was one such book. In 1972, following the groundbreaking Theology of Hope, Moltmann took up the cross of Jesus as 'the foundation and criticism of Christian theology'. At the time, the 1968 generation of students were rebelling, the Vietnam  War continued, the ‘death of God’ was a theme in theology, the nuclear threat hung over us all, Germans were facing the memory of the Jewish genocide under the Nazis, and Latin American theologians were writing ‘liberation theology’.

Forty years on we want to explore the future of the crucified God in a workshop on the theological themes tackled by Moltmann in his book. We will consider the continuing implications for church and theology now. We will ask: What is your recollection of a first encounter with the book; what claimed and claims you in it; what future does this have?

The forum will take place over two days on
June 15-16, 2012.  The main venue will be the Centre for Theology and Ministry at 29 College Crescent, Parkville, Victoria. Registrations are now being accepted. Information about speakers and timetabling will be posted on this website during April 2012, so stay tuned!
